In 1979, as the chairman of India's Atomic Energy and Space Commission, Kalam was entrusted with the task of developing a satellite launch vehicle. This ambitious project involved thousands of engineers and workers.
On August 17, 1979, the day of the satellite launch, Kalam assumed the role of Mission Director. As the launch countdown reached T minus eight minutes, control was handed over to the computer to manage the complex process.
However, at T minus four minutes, the computer detected an issue in the second-stage control system, specifically a leakage. Kalam and his team of experienced experts were faced with a critical decision. The computer recommended aborting the launch, but the experts believed that, despite the problem, the rocket could still be launched.
Kalam's decision was to trust his experts and manually override the computer to launch the rocket. The launch went ahead, but shortly after liftoff, the second stage of the rocket went into an uncontrolled spin, causing the entire mission to fail, and the rocket and satellite ended up in the Bay of Bengal.
Handling such a failure is a crucial aspect of entrepreneurship and leadership. Kalam took responsibility for the failure, despite the fact that over 5,000 people had worked on the mission.
