In this tutorial, we will walk you through the process of creating a captivating Vortex Sphere Paperweight using epoxy resin. This unique paperweight gives the illusion of being larger on the inside, making it a fascinating addition to your home or workspace. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to craft your very own Vortex Sphere Paperweight
- Start by drawing a circle with a diameter of approximately 10cm on a piece of paper.
- Mark a quarter segment within the circle and cover the entire circle with cellulose tape.
- Cut out the circle, making sure to stay close to the marked lines but not obsessively precise.
- Create a cut from the edge to the center of the circle along one of the quarter lines.
- Apply a strip of double-sided tape along the inside of the other quarter line.
- Carefully fold the circle into a cone shape and secure it with the double-sided tape.
- To conceal the seam on the back of the cone, add more tape.
Now, let's move on to the resin part
- You'll need a 65mm silicone sphere mold for this project, although you can use any size you prefer.
- Use clear epoxy art resin with a 2A1B mix ratio by weight. About 24g should suffice for the cone.
- Place the cone in the bottom half of the sphere mold and fill it until it's almost level with the mold.
- Allow the resin to cure until it's solid.
- Once the cone has cured, gently remove it from the paper mold. Wrinkles on the cone are not a problem.
- Use Mod Podge adhesive or any suitable alternative that dries clear. Apply it in a spiral from the point of the cone to the bottom, leaving room for more lines in between.
- Cover the adhesive with fine glitter. Start with silver holographic glitter.
- After it dries, recover any excess glitter for later use.
- Paint a second spiral of adhesive under the first one, using a different glitter color, such as violet.
- Repeat the process with a third spiral and a contrasting glitter color, like black.
- Finally, coat the entire cone with adhesive and cover it with your glitter color of choice. Leave it to dry completely.
Now, let's complete the paperweight
- It will take about 75g of resin to fill the bottom half of the 65mm sphere mold. Fill it almost to the top without allowing it to dome, and let it cure until it's firm.
- For the final pour, you'll need about 50g of resin. Apply a thin layer of resin to the surface of the half-sphere.
- Use a flame to pop any surface bubbles, then place the cone face down onto the resin.
- Fit the top half of the mold into position and seal the join with hot melt glue to prevent resin from seeping through.
- Fill the mold almost to the top, leaving the void area at the top to become the base of the paperweight. Allow it to fully cure.
- Once cured, remove the paperweight from the mold. Trim any excess resin with flush cutters and polish it with polishing paste and a soft cloth.
- Admire your mesmerizing Vortex Sphere Paperweight that appears bigger on the inside.
