Replacing shock absorbers is a critical aspect of maintaining your vehicle's suspension system, ensuring a smooth and safe ride. - Start by turning off the engine, engaging the hand brake, and opening the bonnet.
- Remove the windscreen bay to access the shock absorber retaining nuts.
- Disassemble the front shock absorbers by unscrewing the 4 nuts securing the plastic windscreen frame covers.
- Use a Torx 20 screwdriver to remove the screws securing the windscreen frame.
- Take off the plastic cover and remove the windshield wipers.
- Place adhesive tape to mark the wiper arm locations.
- Remove the lugnut covers and unscrew the lugnuts to take off the wiper arms.
- Remove the side covers and the windshield frame.
- Remove the wiper drive unit to access the strut support bearings on the driver's side.
- Unscrew the 3 screws holding the wiper drive unit in place.
- Unscrew the brace from the metal bay and disconnect the motor power supply.
- Remove the drive unit and the shock absorber cups' screws.
- Lift the front of the car, secure it with axle stands, and remove the front wheels.
- Remove the upper ball from the sway bar link and brush the shock absorber base screw.
- Unscrew the shock absorber base screw and remove the screw.
- Brush the bottom of the shock absorber and spray it with penetrating oil.
- Strike the axle stub to release the shock absorber base.
- Remove the screws holding the strut support bearings and remove the shock absorber.
- Separate the shock absorber from the spring and compress the spring using a socket wrench.
- Unscrew the suspension strut support bearing using an 18mm offset wrench and a 6mm Allen key.
- Remove the suspension strut support bearing assembly.
- Install the new shock absorber and prime it by pressing the shock absorber rod.
- Install the restrained bellows, rotating stop, and the nut on the shock absorber spring.
- Unscrew the spring compression tool and prepare the new part.
- Sand and grease the inside of the stub axle and fit the shock absorber from its upper part.
- Tighten the three screws holding the shock absorber's support bearings.
- Thread the shock absorber base into the stub axle and tighten it.
- Position the brake hose bracket and tighten the shock absorber base screw.
- Reattach the sway bar link and wheels.
- Perform parallelism on your car.
- Secure the vehicle, tighten the retaining bolts, and ensure proper torque on the shock absorber head.
- Reinstall the wiper drive unit and reconnect it.
- Reassemble the metal bay brace, windscreen bay, side covers, and wiper arms.
- Complete the operation by securing the plastic cover and seal.
